80 lat minęło jak jeden dzień – jubileuszowe wydarzenia UniLodz w przyszłym tygodniu

This year, our community is celebrating its 80th anniversary, which allows us to return to what is important to us: community, dialogue and cooperation – an approach focused on people and their well-being. That is why we have prepared a number of initiatives involving our entire academic community.

We have made sure that everyone could find something for themselves next week– after all, the anniversary of the University of Lodz is the anniversary of all of us, so we should celebrate it together!

Formal Meeting of the UniLodz Senate on the 80th Anniversary of the University Establishment

The 80th anniversary cannot be celebrated without a formal meeting of the University of Lodz Senate on 26 May of the current year at midday at the Prof. Stanisław Liszewski Assembly Hall at the Faculty of Geographical Sciences (Łódź, ul. Kopcińskiego 31), which Rector of the Univeristy of Lodz, Prof. Rafał Matera, and the University of Lodz Senate invite you to attend. Formal Meeting of the UniLodz Senate on the 80th Anniversary of the University Establishment
During the ceremony, representatives of six public universities in Lodz, members of the Lodz Academic Partnership, will sign an agreement defining the principles of cooperation within the Lodz Academic Partnership. It provides for, among other things, a number of joint activities of the universities such as: organisation of scientific conferences, concerts, seminars, master classes, workshops and training sessions as well as artistic events; implementation of projects, including scientific, artistic, research, R&D, didactic ones, as well as those promoting partners and more….

In the second part of the formal meeting, the university medals awarded by the Senate of the University of Lodz, the 'Sapientia et Veritas' Medal of Merit for Polish Science and the Rector's awards for outstanding scientific achievements will be presented to friends and employees of our university.

Those interested in participating in the ceremony are asked to register by 21 May using the registration form, and for those who would like to participate in this event, but for various reasons cannot – all is not lost! The formal meeting of the Senate of the University of Lodz will be available to watch live on YouTube.

The Future of Universities. Does the Academy Need a New Formula in a Changing World? – Debate at the University of Lodz

As a university, we want to be a part of our local community, create science with and for people. We want to not only educate but also train and shape new generations. The 80 years spent together have allowed us to boast a rich past, but this round anniversary is also an ideal opportunity to start something new – a common future for UniLodz, which we want to base on dialogue and cooperation of our entire academic community.

The Future of Universities. Does the Academy Need a New Formula in a Changing World? – debate at the University of Lodz
Together we want to create a university based on #BackToHuman principles, and for this to be possible, we need to hear your voice to work out a position together on the future of universities in a changing world.

In many discussions about the role of the university, we declare our desire to strive for interdisciplinarity and scientific excellence, combined with dynamic setting of new trends. At the same time, science increasingly struggles with problems of fraud, plagiarism, manipulation of statistical analyses and professional burnout, excessive pressure and mental burdens, and excellence does not necessarily have to be equivalent to wisdom.

There is increasing talk of a crisis in the master-student relationship. At the same time, humanists do not understand physicists, chemists or biologists and vice versa. However, all of them, without exception, rarely notice that they can draw from each other's experiences to build a completely new quality.

As scientists, we really want our research to have an impact on reality, but we often forget that the hermetic language of science is difficult for people outside the academic world, and even for representatives of different scientific disciplines. At the same time, we are not very involved in social communication and popularisation, often considering it an inappropriate activity for a scientist.

The future of the university should also be viewed through the prism of changes in the mentality of generation Z, the world "after writing" or changes in the perception of young people. However, experience shows that the Academy changes gradually, it does not like revolution. The clashing visions of the university rarely overlap. Or perhaps there is another way? Maybe the young representatives of generation Z, somewhat against their mentors, will build a completely new university, more open, more democratic? Or maybe another one, one that we cannot even imagine today?

In the face of the problems and trends outlined above, we would like to invite scientists and students to take part in an open debate on the future of the Academy, organised as part of the celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the University of Lodz, which will be held on 27 May 2025 (Tuesday) from midday to 2:00 p.m. at the Assembly Hall of the Training and Conference Centre of the University of Lodz, Kopcińskiego 16/18, Lodz.

The debate participants will include: dr hab. Agnieszka Kurczewska, Associate Professor at the University of Lodz, working at the Faculty of Economics and Sociology of the University of Lodz, as well as a Visiting Professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim; Dr Joanna Miksa who is a graduate of history, philosophy and Spanish philology at the University of Lodz, Assistant Professor at the Department of Ethics of the University of Lodz; Prof. dr hab. Jarosław Płuciennik who is a cultural studies, literary studies and cognitive science expert, Professor of Humanities at the University of Lodz and dr hab. Krzysztof Pabis, Associate Professor at the University of Lodz, the University of Lodz Vice-Rector for Popularisation of Science and Education, as well as a young scientist and a naturalist – Jarosław Brodecki, a biology student at the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection of the University of Lodz.

The event will be led by doctoral students of the Doctoral Schools of the University of Lodz: Olena Dubchak, a doctoral student at the University of Lodz Doctoral School of Humanities, and Sebastian Piskorski, a doctoral student at the University of Lodz Doctoral School of Exact and Natural Sciences.

As a diverse, open and tolerant university, we want every person belonging to our academic community to feel like an important part of it, which is why we invite everyone to speak up and participate in the debate. See you there!

SAVE THE DATE: We Connect Generations – University Children's Day x Picnic for the UniLodz Community

Our community boldly and honestly develops science, placing the relationships between man and the world and interpersonal relationships at the centre of interest, which is why among our anniversary initiatives there had to be one that cares for the relationships between all generations of UniLodz!

This is the fourth year in a row that our university has organised a family event on the occasion of Children's Day. This year we will meet at a picnic on 30 May at 3:00 p.m. at the AZS (Academic Sports Association) Łódź stadium, at Lumumby 22/26.

Right after the University Children’s Day we invite all members of our community: students, those pursuing a PhD degree and employees of UniLodz to participate in an integration picnic, which will take place in the same location later in the evening.

As every year, our entire academic community is eager to get involved in organising this unique event – together we are building a university based on #BackToHuman principles!

Student science clubs, student organisations, employees of our university units, the Academic Sports Association, the Polish Teachers' Union (ZNP) at the University of Lodz, the NSZZ "Solidarność" Trade Union Commission at the University of Lodz, animators from partner cultural institutions have prepared a huge number of attractions, such as animations, workshops and stands. A catering zone awaits all participants, and DJ Fagot will provide great music, playing two sets – from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

There will be cyanotype workshops and a joint creation of a story about Lumumbowo, and the evening will culminate at 9:00 p.m. with a screening of the film as part of Extra Polówka.

We have prepared games, sports games, one of the best inflatables... and many more for both our youngest and those little older guests – after all, we are all children that day!

The ideal souvenir of participating in this exceptional, jubilee event may be a T-shirt, which everyone will be able to make themselves using the screen printing method. The unique print will be available to choose from among the winning works of the Back to Human University competition (we remind you that the call of projects for the competition is still ongoing) – more information on our website.

See you on 30 May!
