Women's Day at UniLodz – the Power of Diversity, Dialogue and Female Experience

8 March is a day on which we particularly recognise the presence, contribution and achievements of the women who help shape our university. Researchers, experts, lecturers, students, doctoral students and administrative staff set the pace here every day, bringing openness, respect, curiosity, commitment and a willingness to cooperate. These are the values that form the foundation of the University of Lodz and which have been particularly evident in the projects implemented in recent months.

Women creating a dialogue between art and science

The project “(Nie)dopasowane – o kobiecości między biologią, sztuką a społeczną normą” [(Mis)matched – on Femininity Between Biology, Art and Social Norms] became a unique space for encounter and exchange. Through this project, we demonstrated that the female body is not only an artistic subject but also a field of sociological, anthropological, biological and cultural analyses. Inspired by the artistic exhibition, we have created a space for interdisciplinary discussion about experiences that concern us all – norms, stereotypes, pressure and freedom. The combination of diverse perspectives and viewpoints transformed this project into an intellectual and social laboratory.

The "(Mis)matched" project culminated in a discussion with representatives of the University of Lodz and the Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts Łódź, who discussed the creative process, research and shared conclusions drawn from this interdisciplinary meeting. The conversation is available on the "Science Inspires" channel.

"Wystudiowane w Łodzi – inspirujące kobiety, które wybrały łódzkie uczelnie" [Wystudiowane w Łodzi – Inspiring Women Who Chose Łódź Universities]

Women's Day is also an opportunity to highlight the strength and diversity of women's potential in Łódź's science and education. A prime example is the campaign "Wystudiowane w Łodzi – inspirujące kobiety, które wybrały łódzkie uczelnie" [Wystudiowane w Łodzi – Inspiring Women Who Have Chosen Łódź Universities] jointly implemented by six universities. It tells the story of nearly 60 women associated with the University of Lodz, the Grazyna and Kiejstut Bacewicz Academy of Music in Lodz, the Lodz University of Technology, the Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts, the Lodz Film School, and the Medical University of Lodz. They have graduated from various fields and universities – from biotechnology and nuclear physics through emergency medical services to philosophy, scenography and music. They are united by a passion they discovered during their studies and a decision to connect their careers with Łódź. Some for a dozen or so years, others for shorter periods – but for each of them, choosing a university from Łódź was an important step in their professional and personal journeys. This past October, the women appeared on over 70 large-format posters throughout the city. The outdoor campaign was designed to highlight the diversity of their experiences – from laboratories and lecture halls to creative and social activities. Instead of formal biographies, we saw the "human face" of science: the emotions, passions, everyday life and reflections that shape science and art here and now.
