What is the book about?
It tells the story of a young woman from the Indonesian island of Sumba whose life is brutally interrupted by tradition — abduction and forced marriage. In a world where women’s voices are still silenced, Magi must find the strength within herself to fight for freedom, dignity, and the right to make her own choices.
Who is Dian Purnomo?
Dian Purnomo is a writer and researcher whose work focuses on social issues, women’s rights, child protection, and environmental topics. Her fiction is inspired by research conducted in women’s and children’s prisons, as well as in rural areas of Java, Sumatra, and Eastern Indonesia, where she explored the issue of violence against women and children.
During the meetings, we will talk about how literature can create space for difficult conversations on women’s rights, cultural violence and social taboos. The meeting with the author on November 20 will be conducted in English, whereas the Asian Book Club meeting on November 18 will be in Polish.
