In the latest episode of the "Science Inspires" podcast, we speak with Dr Wojciech Woźniak, Associate Professor at the University of Lodz, a sociologist, and an expert on Finnish public policy. The main topic is Finland's "culture of resilience" and how it translates into national security, its institutions and public debate. The conversation discusses the significance of Finland's accession to NATO, analysing the sources of this unexpected geopolitical shift after 2022.
Issues related to the defence system are discussed, including conscription, the structure of the reserve and the scale of possible mobilisation. Civil defence is also an important topic, with particular emphasis on the extensive infrastructure of shelters in Helsinki. The discussion also revolves around universalist social policy, manifested in programmes such as the "baby box" and the pursuit of equal access to education.
