Diploma in the AI Era – Rules for Those Studying at UniLodz

Generative AI tools have become a commonplace in our lives. They help us work more efficiently by shortening tedious and repetitive tasks, improving the style of our texts and supporting the visualisation of ideas. However, how can we maintain our creativity and originality in an increasingly automated world? The Generative AI Team at the University of Lodz has prepared a series of recommendations that may prove helpful in using GenAI tools during studies.

Below you will find a brief summary of the Rector's Regulation pertaining to the aforementioned Recommendations.

AI as a form of support

Generative AI tools can be used when writing theses or creating term papers – if the instructor consents. This is particularly important if they are intended to assist in:

  • seeking inspiration,
  • stylistic editing of texts,
  • preparing summaries,
  • proofreading translations,
  • visualising notes and concepts.

It’s also a good idea to use GenAI to deepen your own critical thinking by comparing your own ideas and problem-solving strategies with those generated by the AI. It's also worth noting the patterns the AI uses and how we can creatively respond to them.

AI in your theses and final exams

If you've created new substantive content by the use of GenAI (e.g., new texts, interpretations, descriptions, or summaries), remember to include an appropriate citation, e.g.:

ChatGPT, chat.openai.com [access data: ...].

In such a case, remember to also provide information at the beginning of your work that you used GenAI tools in its preparation.

Unethical use of GenAI

The most important rule: using GenAI cannot replace your creative work. Therefore, preparing an entire term paper or diploma thesis, or a significant portion of the analyses contained therein, is considered unacceptable.

You cannot use GenAI during exams or tests unless the instructor/examiner allows it.

Security

Please remember to protect your data and the university's data. Do not enter names, surnames, album numbers, contact information or research materials into GenAI tools – unless they are publicly available.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the use of GenAI tools, you can always consult the course or seminar instructor.
