The Department of Management at the University of Łódź was established in 1964 within the Faculty of Economics and Sociology of the University of Łódź, thanks to the initiative and involvement of the Polish pioneer of organization and management studies – Professor Jan Zieleniewski, PhD. Its original name was the Department of Economics and Work Organization, later changed to the Department of Organization and Management, and eventually to its current name – the Department of Management at the University of Łódź.
The initial core of the Department’s academic staff, headed by Professor Jan Zieleniewski until 1971, consisted of three assistant professors: Dr Marcin Bielski, Dr Walery Janowski, Dr Zofia Mikołajczyk, and three assistants: Zdzisława Janowska, MA; Czesław Sikorski, MA; Henryk Zarychta, MA. Over time, two teaching teams were formed within the Department:
Organization Theory Team – headed by Dr habil. Marcin Bielski
Methods and Techniques of Organization and Management Team – headed by Dr habil. Zofia Mikołajczyk
When Professor Jan Zieleniewski retired, the position of Head of the Department was taken over by Associate Professor Walery Janowski, PhD. After his transfer to the Department of Social Policy, the role was assumed by Associate Professor Marcin Bielski, PhD habil. In 1987, he handed the position over to Professor Zofia Mikołajczyk, PhD habil.
When the Faculty of Management was established in 1994, the Department of Management consisted of two units. The Head of the Department at that time was Professor Zofia Mikołajczyk, PhD habil. In 1998, the position was taken over by Professor Czesław Sikorski, PhD habil., and in 2012 by Dr habil. Tomasz Czapla, Professor of the University of Łódź, who continues to hold the position to this day.
